At Home Baking Soda Stomach Acid Test
Oct 24, 2024Here’s how to do an at-home baking soda test for stomach acid levels, along with what the timing and results mean:
Baking Soda Stomach Acid Test Instructions:
What You’ll Need:
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 8 ounces (1 cup) of water
- Timer or clock
Directions:
- First thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything, dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of 8 ounces of water.
- Drink the entire mixture.
- Start the timer immediately after finishing the drink.
- Pay attention to how long it takes to burp.
What the Results Mean:
-
Burping within 2-3 minutes: This indicates that your stomach acid levels are likely within a normal range. The baking soda (an alkaline substance) reacts with the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), producing carbon dioxide gas, which causes the burp.
-
No burping within 5 minutes or no burp at all: This may suggest that you have low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria). Without enough acid in your stomach, the reaction with the baking soda is weaker or delayed.
-
Immediate burping (within the first minute): This could indicate high stomach acid (hyperchlorhydria) or excessive gas production, but it's more commonly due to swallowing air during the test.
DISCLAIMER: This test is not foolproof and should be used as a simple indicator. If you suspect chronic digestive issues or abnormal stomach acid levels, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional for more accurate testing.
